So, you want to elope?
February 10, 2021

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has altered many plans over the past year, including weddings and the celebrations that go along with them (bye bye, bachelor party). As gathering restrictions and border closures linger and couples are being forced to think outside the box when it comes to their big day, my inbox is buzzing with couples inquiring about eloping instead.

In these unprecedented times, “to elope” has taken on many meanings. Maybe you’re planning a small outdoor ceremony with friends and family, or a date at the courthouse with a couple of witnesses. I’ve always personally been a fan of elopements and small weddings and think there are so many advantages that often get overlooked. So, if you’re adjusting your wedding day plans and you’re feeling a bit defeated, keep these benefits in mind.

1. You can focus on each other, and no one else.

Your wedding day should be about you and your partner, not your Aunt Sally. An elopement wedding allows you to focus on what really matters, without the distraction of other peoples’ expectations or the pressure that comes along with being the center of attention. Fewer people means more meaningful and private vows, and less stress!

2. You’ll save money.

Weddings are expensive, that’s no secret, but an elopement wedding or intimate ceremony can save you a lot of money; it can cost as little as the fee for the marriage license, if you want it to! Now you’re free to put that money towards a post-COVID honeymoon, or your first home together.

3. Your photos won’t be rushed.

For obvious reasons, this is my favourite thing about elopements. With a smaller space, and less people to photograph, we can really take our time, and get all of the photos you want, where you want them. Not to mention, elopement wedding photos can be one of a kind!

4. You can still keep your loved ones involved.

COVID-19 has changed all the rules, and that includes the rule that says elopements have to be a secret. The world is different and your loved ones will understand the circumstances surrounding your decision to elope. There are virtual options that allow others to celebrate with you, and depending on local guidelines, some newlyweds will organize small lunches or dinners with their loved ones shortly after tying the knot.

5. Get married today, party tomorrow.

I love the idea of eloping now, and planning a big party or reception once it’s safe to do so. That’s right… you can have two weddings for the price of one!
